Padar Island: Where Nature Reminds Us We’re Just Tiny Dots
We are but specks—tiny dots among the boundless stars and the immeasurable depths of the ocean.

Have you ever craved a moment so pure, so serene, that it feels like the world has paused just for you? Picture this: you’re sitting back, letting the cool breeze kiss your skin, the gentle notes of sweet music wrapping around you like a warm embrace. And before you, a view so breathtaking, so utterly surreal, that even the best camera couldn’t begin to capture its essence.
That’s exactly how I felt when I visited Padar Island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It’s the kind of beauty that leaves you at a loss for words—a masterpiece of nature painted in vibrant hues of earth, sea, and sky. No lens and no description could do it justice. You have to feel it. Padar Island isn’t just a destination. It’s an experience, a moment of stillness in a chaotic world.

We Are Only Tiny Dots Among The Boundless Stars

After an exhilarating visit to Rinca Island to see the majestic Komodos, we set sail for our next adventure—Padar Island. But our excitement wavered when Yoram, our tour guide, warned us about the strong winds. “It’s too risky,” he said, his tone heavy with concern. Disappointment loomed over us. “But this is the highlight of the trip,” I pleaded, unable to hide my frustration.
Luckily, fate was kind. Just before nightfall, we safely docked at Padar Island, and all my worries melted away. After dinner at 6 PM, I stepped onto the deck, drawn by the calmness of the evening. I sank into a beanbag, letting my body relax completely. Above me, an endless expanse of stars glittered like diamonds scattered across velvet. It was a celestial symphony, and I was its sole audience.
As Monita Tahalea’s soothing voice echoed in Saat Teduh (which means Quiet Time), it felt as though the universe itself was singing along, cradling me in its infinite embrace. Without realizing it, tears began to trace silent paths down my cheeks—not out of sadness, but something far deeper. Was it serenity? A quiet calm that filled every corner of my being? Or perhaps it was the overwhelming beauty of the moment, so pure and profound that my heart couldn’t contain it.

In that serene stillness, surrounded by the vast expanse of nature, I felt the humbling truth of our existence. We are but specks—tiny dots among the boundless stars and the immeasurable depths of the ocean. If you were to see us from the great expanse of the cosmos, we’d vanish in insignificance.
Yet, despite our smallness, we are part of something far greater than ourselves. On Padar Island, as I marveled at the grandeur of creation, I was reminded of a truth so simple yet profound: above us all is God, the Creator of this breathtaking universe.
Whenever pride dares to creep into my heart, I think of Padar Island. It stands as a quiet yet powerful reminder that humility is the soul’s connection to the divine—an acknowledgment of the magnificence of life, and the One who breathed it into existence.
Chasing the Sunrise on Padar Island

The next morning, adventure called before the break of dawn. Yoram, ever the early bird, woke us up while the world was still cloaked in darkness. We weren’t the only ones; other travelers were already stirring, eager for the trek ahead. By a small boat, we crossed the gentle waves, heading toward Padar Island for the highlight of the day.
A word of advice: wear comfortable shoes because the hike to Padar’s iconic viewpoint is no stroll in the park. Also, bring a flashlight! While the tour guides usually provide them, they’re often busy wrangling other tourists. It’s better to have your own to navigate the predawn shadows confidently.
As we started the climb, Yoram shared a bit of good news. “You’re lucky,” he said with a grin. “There are asphalt stairs now. It used to be just jagged stones and cliffs.” Even with the improved path, the 45-minute hike was no joke. The incline tested our stamina, and not everyone in our group made it to the top. The French couple, worn out, turned back halfway. But if you’re ever in this situation, my advice is simple: don’t give up. The reward of waiting at the summit is worth every drop of sweat.

At 6 AM, the moment we’d been chasing finally arrived. The sun peeked over the horizon, bathing the landscape in hues of gold and amber. The blue sea sparkled, and the orange-tinted grasslands glowed as if kissed by a celestial hand. It was as if nature had become an artist, painting a masterpiece before our eyes.
Descending the trail proved trickier than expected. The loose gravel made footing uncertain, and squatting slightly as you go down is the safest way to avoid slips. Back at the boat, a pleasant surprise awaited us. Local artisans had set up shop, offering an array of handmade souvenirs—stone necklaces, intricately carved Komodo figures, and more. Prices ranged from IDR 75,000 to IDR 300,000, but don’t hesitate to haggle for a better deal!
Padar Island isn’t just a place; it’s an experience that fills your heart and leaves you with memories etched as vividly as its sunrise-lit landscapes.
